Got tickets to something in Auckland CBD or Wynyard? Here is where to eat before or after, and why getting there early makes the difference.

Where to Eat Near Auckland Events: A Running Guide

Auckland CBD and Wynyard run a lot of events. Tickets sorted, next problem is food. Most people leave it too late and end up rushed or eating whatever is closest to the doors. Better move: eat near the venue, not at it, and give yourself more time than you think you need.

Fat Puku's has two spots that cover the main event map. 1/492 Queen Street in the CBD and 12 Jellicoe Street in Wynyard Quarter. From 13 September the City Rail Link changes how people move through the city, and both locations sit close to the new stations.

Where to eat before a concert at Spark Arena

Spark Arena sits at the bottom of town near the waterfront. Food options right around it get slammed on show nights. Eat up Queen Street instead, then head down. Fat Puku's at 1/492 Queen Street is a short Uber or bus ride from the arena. From 13 September you can train the whole way: Karanga-a-Hape Station is a short walk from our door, Waitematā Station is right by the arena. Eat properly, then ride down with time to spare. Walk-ins welcome for tables of two or three.

September has Jason Derulo and Shinedown. October brings Noah Kahan, Avenged Sevenfold, Zara Larsson, the Silver Ferns versus the Diamonds, and more. Pre-show feed is sorted.

Where to eat near Wynyard Quarter events

Wynyard hosts the waterfront end of the calendar: summer festivals, boat shows, and anything spilling across Jellicoe Street and the wharf. Fat Puku's Wynyard at 12 Jellicoe Street sits in the middle of it. No walk required. The ASB Waterfront Theatre is a few minutes away, so it works as the pre-theatre stop for that end of town too.

Where to eat before a show at the Aotea Centre, Civic or Town Hall

The Aotea arts quarter (Aotea Centre, The Civic, Town Hall, Q Theatre) sits on mid Queen Street, under ten minutes from Fat Puku's at 1/492 Queen Street. Eat at ours, walk down Queen Street, and you are at your seat without touching a car park. From 13 September the City Rail Link makes this cleaner: Te Waihorotiu Station opens by Aotea Square and Karanga-a-Hape Station is a short walk from our door. Train in, eat, walk to the show.

Auckland Diwali Festival lights up Aotea Square and Queen Street on 31 October and 1 November. Street gets busy. Come early, eat, then head into it.

The pre-show timing problem

Most people leave it too late and spend the meal watching the clock. Sweet spot is sitting down about 90 minutes before doors open. Enough time to order, eat properly, and get to the venue without rushing. On big show nights the whole strip fills in the hour before doors. Early table is the calm table. The new stations also cut the stress of getting across town on those nights. Less time stuck in traffic, more time actually eating.

What to order if you are short on time

Cut it fine? Order simple. The Fat Puku or the Bernie Mac, side of skinnies. Done in 30 minutes with time to walk. Smash burgers come off the griddle fast. Thin Angus beef patties, hard sear, no waiting on a thick patty to cook through. Shakes travel well if you are walking out with one.

Sorting a group before a show

Walk-ins cover most tables. Bringing a group on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening before a show? Booking ahead is worth it. Book at fatpukus.co.nz/book. Groups of eight or more, email contact@fatpukus.co.nz and we will set it up.

Two locations cover the main event map. 1/492 Queen Street for Spark Arena and the Aotea arts quarter. 12 Jellicoe Street for everything at Wynyard. Menu and bookings at fatpukus.co.nz. Pull up.
