The Christmas Lunch Auckland Teams Can Still Pull Off

The end-of-year lunch that still works is a daytime table where people choose their own food, talk, and get back before the afternoon starts.

The Christmas Lunch Auckland Teams Can Still Pull Off

Somewhere around early November, the calendar invite lands without an agenda. Subject line: EOY lunch. Body: can you sort? There is no budget attached, no preferred venue, and half the team has already started a side chat about who is vegetarian this year. You are not an event planner. You are the person who said yes because somebody had to.

This post is about that lunch. It is not a list of Christmas party venues with set menus and deposit traps, and it is not a promise that Auckland will behave for you in December. It is one workable shape for a team end-of-year lunch in the central city: a daytime table, food people choose for themselves, room to talk, and enough time left in the afternoon to get back to the desk. We run two smash burger restaurants in Auckland, one on upper Queen Street at 1/492 Queen Street and one at Shop 1, 12 Jellicoe Street in Wynyard Quarter, and both are the kind of place where a mixed table already knows what it is doing.

The banquet version of Christmas lunch still exists, of course. You can still book a sealed room, pick three courses for everybody, put a card on file months ahead, and hope the quiet people at the far end of the table find something to say. A lot of Auckland teams have been stepping away from that shape. The year has been long enough already. What they want now is somewhere casual enough that people relax, with a bit of everything for the dietary notes in the group chat, and a room that does not need a microphone.

Say you pick a Wednesday in early December and the plan is lunch, not a night that spills into the next morning. At our Queen St shop the walk from the upper Queen and Aotea offices is short enough that people can leave the building together and still look like they meant to. Doors open at 12pm from Tuesday to Sunday, so a midday booking lands when the kitchen is already rolling. Mondays are the exception, since we open at 5:30pm and do not run lunch, so if your team's free day is a Monday, make it dinner or pick another day. Full hours live on our locations page, and they can shift on public holidays, so check the week you actually book.

Wynyard is the other shape of the same lunch, slower on the walk in and closer to the harbour. We have outdoor dining there that the Queen St shop never had, and on a good Auckland December day that matters: jackets come off, the table opens up, and the conversation finds its own pace. Auckland summers are warm and bright, and they still rain, so we do not sell you sunshine. If the sky turns, there are tables inside and the lunch carries on. On Monday and Tuesday we close at 2:30pm after lunch, so an early booking works better than a long afternoon. From Wednesday through Friday we stay open later, and on the weekend we open at 12pm. The waterfront is easy on a bus or a walk from Britomart, and if people drive there is parking around Jellicoe and Madden plus the buildings nearby.

Either way, the point of the meal is that nobody has to eat the same thing. The board already has plant-based and vegetarian options, including the Notorious V.E.G with an Impossible patty, and a gluten-free bun is a free swap, so the dietary spreadsheet in your inbox does not need a second venue. Full table service means someone else is watching the empty glasses while your team actually talks, and the music in the room is the same 80s and 90s nostalgia we run every other day, which is enough energy without turning lunch into a show. Have a look at the menu before you lock the date, and ordering on the day goes quicker.

We do not publish a special Christmas package on this page, and we are not going to invent one here. What we do publish is the path that already works for bigger tables. For groups of 8 or more, email contact@fatpukus.co.nz with your date, time, numbers, and which site you would like, Queen Street or Wynyard, and we will sort it with you. Under 8, you can book a table yourself, and walk-ins are welcome when the room has space. Catering off-site is case by case, so ask if that is what you need.

The invite that landed on your desk does not have to become a project. Pick a day that fits the hours, tell us who is coming, and leave the rest of the afternoon for the work that did not go away just because it is nearly Christmas.

Pull up.

FAQ

Q: Can Fat Puku's take a work Christmas or end-of-year lunch group?

Yes. For groups of 8 or more, email contact@fatpukus.co.nz with your date, time, numbers, and which site you would like, Queen Street or Wynyard, and we will sort it with you. Under 8, book online at fatpukus.co.nz/book, and walk-ins are welcome when we have space.

Q: Which site is better for a CBD office lunch, Queen St or Wynyard?

Queen St at 1/492 Queen Street suits teams walking from upper Queen, Aotea, and Karangahape Road. Wynyard at Shop 1, 12 Jellicoe Street suits waterfront offices and anyone who wants the outdoor dining option when the weather plays along. Check hours for the day you pick on fatpukus.co.nz/locations.

Q: What are the lunch hours, and do they change in December?

Queen St opens at 12pm Tuesday to Sunday and at 5:30pm on Monday, so there is no Monday lunch there. Wynyard is open for lunch Monday and Tuesday from 11:30am to 2:30pm, Wednesday to Friday from 11:30am, and Saturday and Sunday from 12pm. Hours can change on public holidays, so always check fatpukus.co.nz/locations for the week you are booking.

Q: Do you have plant-based or gluten-free options for a mixed team?

Yes. The Notorious V.E.G uses an Impossible patty, named burgers have a veggie option, and a gluten-free bun is a free swap. That covers a lot of mixed tables without a separate set menu. If someone has a tighter allergy need, email us with the group details and we will be straight with you.

Q: Is there outdoor seating?

Wynyard has outdoor dining that our Queen St shop was built without. We do not promise sun in December, because Auckland summers still rain, and we do not publish cover counts here. If the weather turns, there are tables inside. Ask when you email which site you prefer and how many you are bringing.

Q: How far ahead should we email for a December lunch?

We have not published a fixed lead time on the site. As soon as your date is firm is the safest move, especially for early December weekdays when CBD teams tend to book. Include date, time, numbers, and which site in the first email to contact@fatpukus.co.nz so we can reply with what we can do.

Q: Is there parking, and can people come by public transport?

Parking is offsite at both shops. Around Queen St, look at the buildings on Wellesley and Queen. Around Wynyard, there is street parking plus buildings near Jellicoe and Madden, and the Jellicoe Street and Wynyard carparks are close. Wynyard is also a short walk from Britomart and the Downtown Ferry, with City Link and other buses along the waterfront.

Q: Do you do set Christmas menus or catering off-site?

Group bookings of 8 or more eat with us at the restaurant via contact@fatpukus.co.nz. Catering off-site is case by case, so ask. We have not published a separate Christmas set menu on this page, and the regular board is what most teams order from.
